This article is a tad different from ones I’ve written so far. I had a hard time coming up with a title as everyone has a different definition of “working out” and mental health. This article explores the ways that I see working out, eating healthy, and programming to be intertwined.

Burn-out is real. I found that by stepping away from the computer and lifting weights, I have been largely able to avoid it and its’ worse side effects. There are no-doubt similarities between programming and working out/eating. Please note that for the purposes of this article, working out for me consists of eating to fit my current set macros.

The following have aided in my journey, and I would recommend these items to all:

  • Find a mentor,
  • Find a code editor you like aka food scale, and
  • Stay consistence.

Having a mentor was a major factor in what drove me to make the switch from an IT Engineer into a Software Engineer. There are multiple paths when starting out as a Software Engineer — the same applies to working out. For the latter, I found it very useful to hire a personal trainer.
